HR Reporting: between complexity and strategic power

Often pushed to the background in HRIS projects, HR reporting has now become a key lever for organizations. With the evolution of tools like SAP SuccessFactors—and in particular the emergence of Story Reports—it's now possible to transform raw data into a true decision-making tool. Here's an overview of the key concepts and their importance.

📌 What is HR reporting?

HR reporting refers to all the processes involved in collecting, structuring, analyzing, and presenting data related to human resources. This can include workforce data, recruitment, training, payroll, and HR performance indicators. It’s a vital management tool for HR teams, executives, and even frontline managers.

🧠 The different types of reporting in SAP SuccessFactors

Reporting Tables are based on raw data and are often used in Excel exports. Their simple format makes them particularly suitable for so-called “operational” analyses. They are part of the Legacy Reporting tools.

Legacy Reporting tools, such as Ad Hoc or Canvas, belong to an older generation. These are less flexible and are now being phased out by SAP in favor of more modern solutions.

Story Reports represent the new generation of HR reporting. Built using the same technology as SAP’s flagship Business Intelligence product—SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)—and natively integrated into People Analytics, these allow the creation of interactive dashboards enriched with advanced visualizations, calculation functions, and analytics. These reports rely on unified data models that are updated in real time, offering a comprehensive, precise, and dynamic view of HR indicators.

🧩 The strategic importance of reporting

Beyond their descriptive function, reporting tools play a key role in managing human resources. They allow organizations to monitor crucial metrics such as turnover, performance, and gender equality. They’re also essential for meeting legal obligations—like CSRD, CSR, or gender equality—and for anticipating future needs in recruitment, training, or workforce planning. Moreover, effective reporting contributes to a better employee experience by making it easier to track career paths.

Several concrete reporting solutions are already offered by Arago to simplify the day-to-day tasks of HR teams. A Candidate Screening tool provides a global overview of recruitment requests, with filters by skills, role, or level.

🎓 Support and training

To help clients get the most out of reporting, tailored training programs are available:

  • Basic training: Learn to navigate reporting tools
  • Advanced training: Custom calculations, complex KPIs
  • Module-specific training: Reporting for recruitment, performance, etc.

📈 Current challenges in HR reporting

HR reporting is evolving as part of an ongoing transformation. The adoption of Story Reports requires a new, more visual, interactive, and business-oriented approach to report creation.

Regulatory compliance is also becoming a major concern, particularly with CSRD, which demands accurate reporting on social and environmental dimensions.

Finally, user skill development is crucial. The goal is to empower HR teams to independently build their own reports so they can better detect trends, anticipate needs, and adjust their strategies accordingly.

HR reporting has become a strategic tool—essential for effective and responsible human resources management. As technology evolves, so do the opportunities to enhance decision-making through data.
